Over 80% of the people want mining ban at Loma Miranda
Santo Domingo.- Over 80% of the population wants the government to ban mining at Loma Miranda, La Vega (central), according to a Gallup survey published by newspaper Hoy.
Canada based miner Xstrata Nickel Falcondo awaits approval to extract ferronickel in that area, which environmentalist consider a vital water sources and demand the preservation of its ecosystem.
Only 10% say the government should allow the exploitation of Miranda’s 313, of the area’s 1,373 hectares, where United Nations technicians conducted an evaluation of the environmental impact study submitted by the mining company.
Gallup polled 1,200 citizens across the country, from April 11 to 15.
