Official wants the Pope to come mark New World’s first mass in 1494
Santo Domingo.- Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia on Monday said the Pope Francis has been invited to visit the Dominican Republic next year, to mark the 520th anniversary of the first mass celebrated in the New World, on January 6, 1494.
He said the event could promote “religious tourism,” which he affirms is becoming more popular in the country, especially the Las Mercedes site near the central city of La Vega, and La Altagracia province, home to Higuey’s Basilica, among other shrines.
The official noted that 2014 will mark 520 years since the first Catholic Mass, officiated in Latin by Friar Bernardo Boyle in the village La Isabela, Puerto Plata (north).
“This celebration is such an event that although Pope Francis has said he has no plans for another trip to the Americas yet, when informed that we are celebrating 520 years, which isnt done every day, I’m sure he may want to accompany the Dominican people in this occasion, ” Garcia said.
