Number of American and British tourists visiting the Dominican Republic continues to grow
The number of tourists visiting the Dominican Republic continues to grow. During the January-August period these numbers registered a 2.1% increase, and a total number of 2.8 million tourists visited the country.
The United States is still the country’s main generator of tourists. Some 1.2 million U. S. citizens visited the country during this time period, representing a 9.4% increase over last year. However, Russia is the fastest growing market for the Dominican tourism industry.
Some 112,000 Russian tourists visited the country during this time period, a growth of 14.6% in comparison to last year’s figures.
The United States and Canada accounted for 54% of all visitors to the D.R., registering 1.7 million visitors. Second on the list is France, with 160,000 visitors (5.7% growth); Germany, 130,000 visitors (4.2% growth); Russia, 112,000 (3.9%); Spain, 98,000 (3.4%); Puerto Rico, 77,000 (2.7%); Argentina, 74,000 (2.6%) and Great Britain, with a 2.4% jump from last year’s numbers.
Russia is the fastest growing market for the Dominican tourism industry, and has steadily become the third largest market in Europe surpassing Spain, Italy and Great Britain.
The German tourism market is in full recovery, because it has experienced a 13.1% growth within the European market.
The European countries seriously impacted by the economic crisis (Spain, France and Italy) have experienced no significant growth. However, The British market experienced a 6.5% increase.
The five who complete the list of the top 15 countries are Italy, with 52,000 tourists (1.8% growth); Chile, with 51,000 tourists (1.8%); Venezuela, 41,000 (1.4%); Colombia, 28,000 (1.0%), and Peru, 23,000 (0.8%).
This particular group of countries contributes with 6.8% of the total number of tourists visiting the Dominican Republic through the country’s international airports.
Overall, 1.7 million tourists (60%) visited the country from North America; 718,000 from Europe (25.4%); 299,000 from South America (10.3%); 133,000 from Central America and the Caribbean (4.6%); and Asia, 5,971(0.2%).
