New Immigration Plan
Foreigner residents in the country with criminal records or who are neither working nor studying at Dominican education establishments cannot benefit under the National Plan to Regulate Foreigners for acquiring nationality.
These rules are contained in the 40 articles relating to the Regulation Plan published by the Ministry of Interior and Police and unanimously approved by the National Immigration Council, chaired by President Danilo Medina. The Plan orders all resident foreigners in the country to legalize their status within an 18-month period beginning on 1 December this year.
The Plan has two phases, the first from 1 December to 1 May, which will be to schedule and organize the Plan and the second phase from 1 June 2014 to 31 May 2015 when the documentation will be issued. The plan offers special cost and time advantages for long- term residents in the Dominican Republic and for anyone who does not have the legal documents normally required for the process.
The plan is published in Diario Libre today as comments are being received until Friday. It is described as more accommodating to illegal foreigners than the previous Immigration Plan whose ruling was passed in 2011.
