Navy arrests 78 Haitian boatpeople headed to Puerto Rico
La Romana, Dom. Rep.- Dominican Naval Intelligence agents arrested 78 Haitians dawn Wednesday, 48 of them as they sailed aboard a yola type boat headed to Puerto Rico, from Boca de Yuma (southeast).
Also arrested were two Dominicans who the Navy affirms were the boat’s captains.
The other 30 Haitians were arrested near the town of Miches (northeast) on a road leading to a beach where agents also seized a 30 foot yola, which would allegedly sail illegally to Puerto Rico.
Navy Chief Edwin Dominic ordered the Haitian detainees brought to Santo Domingo.
The foreigners reportedly paid a total of RD$1.2 million to Dominican and Haitian organizers.
