Minister: U.S. pulls scholarships on medical students’ poor grades

Santo Domingo.- Higher Education, Science and Technology minister Ligia Amada Melo on Wednesday confirmed that the U.S. withdrew the grant provided to a group of UCE University medical students, for failing to reach scores above 75 points.

Although she didn’t specify how many students were affected, the official called the situation worrisome and that UCE is looking for ways to help them.

She said UCE’s Medicine program complies with her department’s requirements and that the rest of the students have no problems. “The students who were awarded scholarships by the U.S. reached grades below 75 points; the sponsors require a higher score.”

Melo said she regrets the situation because with the funds from Washington’s scholarships, UCE also helped other students of low income. “We’re waiting for UCE to submit to the Ministry the records of some of the students whose scholarship was repealed, to see if they can be granted another.”
