Medina says US$262.0M guarantee 10,000 new classrooms by year end
Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina on Friday told contractors that the 10,000 classrooms they were hired to build must be ready by December 31.
“I want you to make a commitment here: that these schools are not going to be halted one single second starting today. The commitment I want you to assume is to double the work and thirdly, the schools must be ready by December 31,” the president said.
He also suggested that they pick up the pace to finish the work because the classrooms will be used in the coming year.
Medina also pledged to provide the lands needed to start building the schools, so they can start working no later than October 1.
He affirmed that the work won’t stop for lack of funds and announced a RD$11.0 billion (US$262.0 million) line of credit to ensure that doesn’t happen.
“The manager of the (State-owned) Reservas bank is here, we will put a 11 billion peso line of credit,” Medina said, adding that the funds also cover 50 percent of what remains to be budgeted or measured.
