Medina pledges boost for semiprecious stone Larimar found only in the country
Bahoruco, Dominican Republic.- President Danilo Medina on Sunday announced the government’s financial and logistical help for larimar miners, and will create a school to train jewelers of the semiprecious stone found only in the Dominican Republic.
He promised them safe and ventilated tunnels with extractors, and instructed Mining Agency director Alexander Medina, to build one for safety.
Medina, who met with the unions of larimar miners, jewelers and artisans, and the La Filipina Larimar Cooperative, said the stone can be a country-brand, such as Chile’s lapis lazuli, of great demand among tourists.
The President began his traditional Sunday tour at Boca de Cachón, where the Government builds 537 homes for 3,500 people uprooted by the swelling of Lake Enriquillo.
