Medina approves RD$37M to boost chayote, cacao crops
Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic .- President Danilo Medina on Sunday approved RD$37 million in loans to chayote growers of Palo Blanco, Jarabacoa (central), and cacao farmers of Maimon, aimed at obtaining higher yields and better quality varieties.
The head of State visited both communities where he spoke with members of farmer associations, and in Maimon’s case conditioned the disbursement of a RD$25 million loan to grow and package chayote, to increasing the number of members from 57 to 100, and increase the lands for that crop.
As part of his traditional visits on Sundays, Medina stopped in Jarabacoa first, and urged chayote growers to work for a better-tasting pod and with a more attractive appearance
The growers said the funds will be used to plant a new variety which can be harvested every two weeks and throughout the year, with better taste and appearance, and suitable for export.
