Lake Enriquillo swallows more than 2,000 hectares of farmland
Jimani, Dominican Republic. –Lake Enriquillo’s expansion has submerged more than 2,000 hectares of pasture and farmlands in Independencia province (west), said local resident Sergio Perez, who affirmed that the flooding has further impoverished the already depressed region.
He said it’s impossible to quantify the losses in livestock, agriculture and other areas.
“In Boca de Cachon, as a community, around 700 hectares of lands for pasture and farm production has been affected, affecting 518 families, but more than 2,000 hectares are under water in the province,” he said, interviewed on Radio Enriquillo
Since taking office, he said, president Danilo Medina has sought to solve the situation, such as the construction of the new housing project at Boca de Cachon.
“For the ranchers who lost their livestock which drowned in the lake, President Medina ordered the distribution of 250 hectares for us to work,” Perez said, adding that technology will be used to irrigate the lands at Jimaní’s Guzman sector.
