Labor and management’s tug-of-war over salary increase

Santo Domingo. – Labor and management’s tug-of-war over a salary increase is being staged Wednesday morning at the Labor Ministry’s National Wage Committee (CNS) meeting, where an agreement looms.

Before starting the meeting between business and union leaders, CNS president Gloria Henriquez appeared upbeat on that both sides will agree on an increase to the minimum wage, which hasn’t been raised since two years ago.

But both sides don’t seem eager to change the 5-point spread as labor demands no less than 17%, while employers stick to their proposed 12%.

In that regard, Rafael -Pepe- Abreu president of the unions grouped in CNUS, said if a 17% increase was agreed to two years ago, they can’t  go along with a lower amount now.

The CNS meeting now taking place at the Labor Ministry was slated to start 9:30am, but was delayed for around one hour.
