La Barquita: An impossible dream begins
President Danilo Medina inaugurated the start of a housing project in La Barquita, Santo Domingo yesterday, Tuesday 3 December. The residential area, called La Nueva Barquita, will transform three poor areas on the banks of the Ozama River, home to 1,620 families who have been suffering from constant flooding.
Jose Miguel Gonzalez Cuadra, executive director of the Committee for Change in La Barquita, said that as well as moving families, this was an Integrated Human Intervention and Environmental Rescue Plan.
He said the project would have river bus stops, a community center, Civil Defense, a fire station, a police station, schools, kindergartens, parks and sports facilities. The first stage will begin with 830 homes and 50 stores.
Father Gregorio Alegria blessed the project and thanked President Medina for thinking about the poorest Dominicans. President Medina recalled that he had come to la Barquita on one of his first surprise visits when he had only been in office for 29 days. He said that they would start to build a dream that once seemed impossible.
