Just 8% of Dominican elderly has a pension, 24% live in poverty
Santo Domingo.- Only 8.2 percent of Dominicans over 65 has a pension, says a survey sponsored by the UN Population Fund for Development, which notes that 24.4% of the elderly live under the poverty line.
It said life expectancy after 60 is 20 years, whereas a healthy life after that age is 15.5 years.
It also noted that only 19.9% of Dominicans over 60 have a high education or higher.
The UN study affirms that 87% of those over 50 said they form part of family or social support networks, and that 57% of those older than 50 say they are satisfied with the access to public transport systems.
