In the last five years divorces are averaging 17.000 in the DR
SANTO DOMINGO. Between 2008 and 2012 there were 87,010 divorces for an average of 17,000 yearly separations.
The data reported by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) indicate that for 2008, there were 17,181 divorces. This went down to 16,408 in 2009, but went up to 17,674 in 2010 and then 17,927 in 2011, and then slightly down in 2012 to 17,820.
The numbers are complied in the report “Dominican Republic in Numbers 2013″ produced by the National Statistical Office (ONE) which also places the National District as the area with the most divorces at 22.61%, followed by Santiago with 17.66%, the province of Santo Domingo with 12.24% and La Vega with 6.9%.
The province of Santo Domingo has a larger population than the National District (965,040), Santiago (963,422), and La Vega (394,205). The registries indicate that July is the month with the greatest number of divorces with an average of 1,571.4 each year.
In spite of the breakups, these are not more than the marriages. Between the years 2008 and 2012 there was an average of over 41,000 marriages per year, with December being the preferred month for the nuptials with an average of 5,424 weddings each year. In 2011 there were 44,243 weddings, a number which decreased slightly in 2012 at 43.307.
The province of Santo Domingo leads all areas in the number of weddings with an average of 9,405.8 per year, followed by the National District and Santiago.
