Hotels ‘fully booked’ over Easter
Santo Domingo.- The country’s hotels are practically full, according to the Hotels and Tourism Association, Asonahores.
The vice president of the association, Arturo Villanueva, called on local vacationers to drive carefully on the way to their hotels.
He said that hotels in the capital had lower rates of occupation, because the city of Santo Domingo was not a tourist attraction, while acknowledging the work being done by the authorities to attract larger tourist numbers.
Villanueva said that occupation rates in hotels in the Puerto Plata, Bayahíbe and Punta Cana-Bávaro areas were very high.
He said that last year the country’s hotels were full over Easter and that the sector expected to see a repeat of the situation this year. The tourism sector leader said that there were always special offers for this period through tour operators and travel agents.
“Dominicans make the most of the hotels as well as visiting their home towns and their relatives, in response to a proactive campaign that the Ministry of Tourism has launched to promote the country’s tourist areas,” he stated.
Villanueva said that the Tourism authorities had established strict controls for using the beaches and were restricting the use of motorized boats. He said that Dominicans typically preferred the beaches to the mountains, and that the southwest would be popular with internal tourists over Easter, especially the regions of Barahona, Pedernales and the Lake Enriquillo area.
