Haitian-Dominicans again protest “statelessness”

Santo Domingo.- A group of Dominicans of Haitian descent staged a protest in the courtyard of the government offices in front of the National Palace on Monday, to remind president Danilo Medina of their demand to end their “statelessness.”

The demonstrators asked that Medina repeal Central Electoral Board resolution 1207, which they affirm denies them their identity.

“Mr. President, help us. We have many problems, we want to study, get married, we want to have a decent job. Free us from the chains of Pharaoh,” said Ana Maria Belique, a spokesperson of the movement “ReconocidoRD” (RecognizedDR), which groups around 22,000 Dominicans of Haitian descent affected by the decision of 2007.
