Groups set to launch ecotourism at Sierra de Bahoruco National Park

Santo Domingo.- The Hispaniola Ornithological Society (SOH), which co-manages Sierra de Bahoruco National Park (southwest) works to protect its biodiversity, as well as generate sustainable income for its preservation.

Listin.com.do reports that the Sierra de Bahoruco participatory management strategy, which began last May and concludes April 2015, aims to ensure the conservation of its biodiversity, through local incentives to improve local governance, binational relations and reduce threats.

SOH director Jorge Luis Brocca said Sierra de Bahoruco is one of the country’s most important biodiversity areas, for which it’s been working to preserve the North Slope for several years, together with the Environment Ministry.

He said the project has the support of the American Bird Conservancy and recent financing from the Critical Ecosystems Partnership Fund (CEPF).

Brocca said they’ll promote Sierra de Bahoruco as an ecotourism destination to maintain the protected area and for the nearby towns of Duvergé, Mella, Puerto Escondido, Venga Ver and Las Baitoas to ease their pressure on the Park.
