GoldQuest strikes it big in the Dominican west

Santo Domingo.- According to projections by Canadian miner GoldQuest, San Juan de la Maguana province (west) will house one of the country’s biggest gold and copper mines in less than five years, with at least 10 million ounces of gold.

Although the size of the deposit has ye to be determined, Mining Agency director Alexander Medina says the company has credible findings since perforations began in1998 at Las Tres Palmas, a project that includes Hondo Valle, Los Tomates, La Escandalosa, La Higuera and other villages at the San Juan river’s upper basin.

GoldQuest’s first discovery was in 2007 at La Escandalosa, near Hondo Valley , where it calculated the presence of  3.1 million tons at 3.14 grams of gold per ton, or 316,000 ounces of ore .

After several geophysical and Induced Polarization (IP) studies another gold deposit was located at El Romero last year. “The best hole was 235 meters and found 7.9 grams of gold per ton and 1.4 % copper,” says Gold Quest in a report sent to the Mining Agency in July.

The Canadian miner called the perforations at El Romero “spectacular.” Its report, quoted by hoy.com.do, says 4.5 grams of gold per ton and 1% of copper were found in a 160 meter column, while 15 grams of gold per ton and 1.4 % of copper found in the same column at 44 meters.

Copper and gold deposits were also discovered at La Guama and Los Comíos in March.

Currently there are 25,000 meters drilled throughout the area since the discovery of El Romero in May 2012, in addition to two perforation rigs after the discovery at Las Tres Palmas (2011).
