Going fishing for cocaine
Known as going fishing for “squared seabass”, it is an activity long undertaken by fishermen who have found it to be more profitable than normal fishing in the waters off Pedernales in the southwest. The fishermen head out to sea to ‘capture’ packages of cocaine dumped by drug traffickers when fearing to be captured. The fishermen told Hoy reporters that this particular catch is then sold to the best bidder.
Others camp at beach sites where packages are known to drift ashore, waiting for the packages of cocaine or cocaine bricks. One young man said that these hauls can appear any day, and it is just a matter of luck and patience. Good catches are known in the El Cano area off the Oviedo Lagoon, or in the isolated beach of San Luis, a 16km white sand beach.
