Gabriel Mora (Canoa) court case opened
A Puerto Plata judge has ordered the opening of the court case against Gabriel Mora (Canoa), the elusive mayor of Cabarete, who over the years has successfully lobbied to avoid standing trial for accusations of serious irregularities in office. Canoa is known to have strong political support that has enabled him to stay out of court. Judge Carolina Castro also ordered hearings about Canoa’s predecessor Eddy Morfe. Canoa is accused by the Attorney Genral of serious irregularities in the management of RD$185 million in Cabarete. The accusations are based on investigations by the government administrative corruption office (DPCA) and a Chamber of Accounts audit of the funds managed by the Cabarete council from 2004-2010. The audits show irregular use of more than RD$112 million.
