Four of the world’s 10 richest invest here

New York.-Of the world’s 10 richest people gauged by Bloomberg, four have major investments in the Dominican Republic, including those in first and third place.

Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim, who tops the list with an estimated at US$74.7 billion, owns America Movil, which is the parent of the telecom Claro in Dominican Republic.

Second on the list is Microsoft founder Bill Gates (US$ 62.7 billion), followed by Spanish Amacio Ortega (US$ 57.0 billion) who owns Inditex, parent of the Zara store chain, which has several local outlets.

Fifth place finds the owner of Ikea, Ingvar Kamprad (US$42.2 billion), who opened a store in the Dominican capital three years ago.

Bloomberg ranks French baron Bernard Arnault eighth, with US$28.6 billion, of the chain Carrefour, which has been in the country for several years.

Others not as rich

Among the top 40 billionaires figure jut one Brazilian, Jorge Lemann, owner of the breweries AB Inbev (US$18.8 billion), and who at 36th is his country’s only representative.

Bloomberg, hired by eldia.com.do, takes into account the price of shares in publicly traded companies.
