Environment: recovery of the mountains a national priority
SANTO DOMINGO.- Environment minister Bautista Rojas yesterday announced the recovery of mountains as a national priority, and launched a plan to halt their progressive deterioration ranges have been subjected to for decades.
He said the negative impact on ecosystems and the lives of communities nationwide is unacceptable, and warned it will not continue. “That’s why the Ministry has decided to implement a series of initiatives to reverse the situation as soon as possible.”
The official said in addition to reforestation, the plan includes raising awareness in families living in mountains on the importance of their protection, payment for environmental services, halting subsistence farming, and penalizing environmental crimes, among others.
Rojas spoke during one of the daily reforestation drives in the Sabaneta basin (southern Central Mountains), where 31,000 trees were planted.
