Education Minister wants to increase teachers’ salary

A spokesman for the Ministry of Education has offered the teachers unions a salary increase of 20%. A teacher at a public school earns now 8,972.63 pesos per month. That will be raised to 10,767.63 pesos. The teachers have held regular protests in recent months in which they claim a raise of 100% of their salary. To maintain a family you need at least 20,000 pesos per month. The teachers in the Dominican Republic are poor and are often irregular paid (months late). Whether the teachers union accepts the promised 20% salary increase is not yet known.
