East region cacao, rice growers to get funding, infrastructure
Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina yesterday ordered repairs of levees in rice plantations and financing for cacao bean growers and businesswomen of the towns Vicentillo, Hato Mayor and Miches (northeast).
He ordered the reconstruction of the dam at La Gina, Miches, which irrigates around 2,400 hectares of rice paddies, and announced funding for the VIcentillo Women’s Association, to increase production of cacao jam, wines, liquors derivatives if cacao.
In Hato Mayor Medina heard the demands by the Dominican Cacao Growers Association and representatives from other nearby villages, and pledged to create a nursery to replant nearly 1,900 hectares per year, with a goal to renew 30,000 hectares within six years.
Medina approved a RD$5.0 million loan for the nursery and another RD$12.2 million to buy three boilers, one for the cacao growers of Hato Mayor and two for those in Miches and El Seibo.
