DR volleyball team advances in the Grand Prix
The Dominican women’s volleyball team (ranked 10th in the world) will travel to Taiwan to play a third round of the World Grand Prix Volleyball Championship. Over the weekend of Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August the DR finished the second round in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico with victories against Puerto Rico and Bulgaria and a loss to Olympic medal winner, Brazil. Dominican team captain Bethania de la Cruz finished the round as second leading scorer with 114 points, second only to Russian player Nataliya Goncharova.
Dominican players won their five-set game against Bulgaria 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 28-30, 16-14). We had to make rearrangements but we finally reach the win.” Bulgaria had come into the match after defeating the round winner Brazil 3-1 earlier in the series. Bulgaria is ranked 43rd in the world, Brazil No. 1.
The DR also defeated Puerto Rico in the “Clash in the Caribbean” in the FIVB World Grand Prix on Saturday 10 August, overcoming hosts and neighbors Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-20) in Mayaguez.
