Dominicans mark 169 years of victory over Haiti in key battle
Santo Domingo.- Today marks the 169th anniversary of the Battle of March 19 fought in Azua province (south), where Dominican troops led by general Pedro Santana defeated the Haitians, which signaled the end of the War for Independence began February 27, 1844.
Several activities to mark the patriotic date are being staged in that province since early 8am Tuesday, when an Armed Forces Color Guard offered a 21 gun salute to the heroes at the Battle of March Park.
President Danilo Medina will lead the parade and the conclusion of the ceremony.
