Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico to buy natural gas jointly to cut costs

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico plan to buy natural gas jointly to reduce costs, Puerto Rico Secretary of State David Bernier Rivera announced Tuesday.

“We decided to purchase fuel together, specifically natural gas, ensuring increased volume to decrease cost. Energy officials from both countries are gathered to reach an agreement as we speak,” Bernier said in a National Palace press conference after meeting with president Danilo Medina.

Although the official didn’t specify how much the two nations would save from the agreement or how long it would take to forge the pact, he affirmed that “we’ll buy from who makes the best offer.”

Dominican Foreign minister Carlos Morales called the meeting of Dominican and Puerto Rican officials a revival of ties between the two countries, adding that they also agreed to cooperate in various areas.

He said Puerto Rico will cooperate with Dominican Republic in a literacy program and in a low-cost housing project, while local officials will help the island nation on agriculture, specifically greenhouses and rice harvests.

Bernier added that both countries work on combined harvests of animal feed to reduce costs.
