Dominican Republic president admits wages of misery

Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina on Wednesday slammed Dominican Republic’s wages, since in his view make it impossible for most of the people to get decent housing regardless of how cheap they are.

He said no country can move forward with wages of misery, and asked the support of all sectors to improve them, because he cannot do it alone. “I want to ask you above all, to those who have the possibility of employing people, that a country whose cost of living has become more expensive, they have to realize that with people working in miserable conditions, a country doesn’t progress.”

Medina, who surprised those present by speaking during the private sector’s 4th Table on Housing, complained that no one wants to make sacrifices in the country.

“In a country where 56% of its economically active population lives on wages below 10,000 pesos (US$244.0) is going to be extremely difficult for them to buy a home, and in these conditions, regardless of the policies and instruments created, it will to be difficult to grow at the rate they expect, especially housing brokers,” he said.
