Dominican Republic opens ‘biggest’ power plant at a cost of US$707.0M

San Pedro, Dominican Republic.- President Danilo Medina on Sunday headed ribbon cutting for the country’s biggest power plant complex, built by the EGE Haina power company and Barrick Pueblo Viejo, at a cost of more than RD$29.0 billion (US$707.0 million) to generate 430 megawatts.

Built at the Quisqueya Energy Park in the community of the same name, the plants feature 12 engines each, which could be powered by various fuels, which can reportedly be switched instantly.

The plant also features steam turbines which generate 30 megawatts using waste heat from the engines, and can take advantage of fluctuations in fuel prices.
