Dominican Republic continues under Venezuela’s oil pact

Caracas.-  The 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of Petrocaribe agreed Sunday to continue with Venezuela’s oil purchase agreement and create a regional integral economic zone.

The gathering in Caracas included the leaders and other representatives of 21 countries, 18 already part of Petrocaribe including Guatemala and Honduras, who joined the mechanism yesterday, in addition to full membership for Brazil, Bolivia and Ecuador, members of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of America (ALBA).

President Nicolas Maduro said his election continues the solidarity mechanism created in 2005 to prevent the collapse of the region’s economies from spiraling oil prices.

Maduro took a jab at the opposition, affirming that its victory would’ve ended Petrocaribe, because, “fair ideas always have backward, unjust, reactionary, inhuman as a counterpart, and even ideas such as the exclusive sale of Venezuelan oil under conditions fixed only by the market.”

“In Venezuela, unfortunately, a fascist, anti-Bolivarian, anti Latin-American, anti-Caribbean neo-right wing, has incubated ” which has a “disregard” for the neighboring countries,” he aid, adding that none of the representatives attending the summit should doubt this.

“None of you should doubt this, Maduro said, because this is encouraged by elites in the United States,” ??and allows for “the most retrograde positions since the time of (Chilean dictator Augusto) Pinochet and defended in some cases “by even more retrograde.”

Also adopted in the Summit was “the start of work to establish an economic zone that includes all comprehensive aspects of investment, trade, shared development and all mechanisms for energy, economic and financial stability in our region.”
