Dominican Republic and Cuba to expand trade relations

HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) — The Dominican Republic and Cuba have taken new steps aimed at increasing commercial relations, as the two Caribbean nations are currently making efforts to develop their economies and cushion the effects of the current global crisis.

A Cuban delegation headed by Ambassador Alexis Bandrich was welcomed on Wednesday by the Chamber of Commerce and the mayor of the northwestern city of Santiago in the Dominican Republic. The two parties addressed opportunities to develop new business projects for mutual benefit.

The president of Santiago’s Chamber of Commerce, Maria Victoria Menicucci, said they hoped to reach accords that boost bilateral trade.

Addressing executives from 20 local companies, Menicucci said that Santiago is a region marked by its livestock and agricultural production and free-zone services. She particularly referred to the local construction material sector, such as cement, blocks, and metallic structures, which are sold on the international market.

The executive said it is necessary to deepen trade relations between the two countries and she went on to stress that Cuba is currently diversifying its economy, which offers many opportunities for advancement.

Meanwhile, Bandrich expressed his country’s interest in identifying opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation and consider new projects.
