Dominican officials powerless to halt Haitian ‘invasion’ of South West
BARAHONA, Dominican Republic. – Immigration Agency regional director Jose Alberto Felix on Thursday admitted that his inspectors are powerless to put a halt to the large numbers of undocumented Haitians who take up residence illegally in the Southwest.
The official said the authorities can’t do anything to control the entry of the Haitians into Dominican territory, citing a lack of tools to detain the undocumented aliens within his jurisdiction.
He said however that Immigration agents and inspectors are focused on monitoring the city’s port, to halt the entrance of any Haitian aboard boats.
Quoted by elnuevodiario.com.do, Felix said many Haitians have “invaded” farms in the Southwest, prompting farmers to request their eviction from their properties, calling their presence in the town, “notorious.”
