Despite growing rebuke, Utility insists on coal-fired plants
Santo Domingo.- Despite growing rebuke for the announced coal-fired plants, the CEO of the State-owned Electric Utility (CDEEE) yesterday said the technical and financial offers from the eight companies which took part in the tenders for two units of 300 megawatts each will be received later this month.
Ruben Jimenez Bichara said once the details are known the winner will be announced to start the project. “However the studies and the financial part have been worked on in parallel.”
The official defended the coal plants as necessary to benefit the entire country, noting that production will more balanced and will be done ??between natural gas and coal. “That is what suits everyone.”
Jimenez said the coal-fired plants will add around 600 megawatts to the system, adding that the current plants will be converted to natural gas this year. “The gas terminal will be the biggest investment, of around US$300 million.”
