Customs says Barrick gold exports top US$1.0B; vigilance boosted
Santo Domingo.- Barrick Gold Corp.’s mine at Pueblo Viejo (central) exported US$1.0 billion since extraction resume early this year, Customs director Juan Fernando Fernández revealed Wednesday.
The official’s statement came during his announcement that the Canadian based miner will open a site at its facility near the city of Cotui, where Customs Agency technicians can observe the materials Barrick exports.
Fernandez also announced that Customs will install a high-tech lab to verify its exports.
“We are improving quality control and we are investing from 38 to 40 million pesos in this process,” he said, adding that RD$30.0 million were spent in automating the customs retrieval process.
