Cross-mountain road will be “green”; beltway to cost RD$280M

Santo Domingo.- Public Works minister Gonzalo Castillo on Sunday affirmed that the Cross-mountain highway will be green for which the controversial tunnel under the Bermudez National Park has been discarded.

He said once the environmental studies and budgeting conclude, there’ll be a call for tenders to build the San Juan de la Maguana-Santiago road. “We understand that this tender might perhaps be from August to October.”

The official said the road will be built on the lowest part of the Central Mountains, to affect the National Park as little as possible.

Castillo said contrary to what is widely believed, the road has an ecological benefit, because many trees are being cut down in the area, mostly unseen because of the lack of access.

He said it will boost the ecology with reforestation, while as a scenic route will also lead to economic development.

He said the tunnel was ruled out on high cost, for which it will be a green road with normal travel.

Beltway

Castillo said groundbreaking on the Haina -Boca Chica beltway will be held Tuesday, June 18, noting the road will ease traffic, since those heading to the South or North regions will not have to enter Santo Domingo.

“The first stage of the four-lane road, 87 kilometers long, will be inaugurated in December 2014,” the official said, quoted by eldia.com.do. He said it will have 14 overpasses and traffic interchanges, built at a cost of RD$280.0 million.
