China wants in on Dominican dough
Santo Domingo. -A Chinese state-owned company stated to president Danilo Medina its interest in setting up shop in the Dominican Republic and take part in building infrastructure projects, including a dam at Madrigal, on the Haina river.
China Railway Group Limited, Asia’s largest construction company and the world’s second biggest, even offered the government as much as 85% financing for the dam, but no reports of a response have surfaced thus far.
Brazil’s Andrade Gutierrez and Odebrecht are currently the main foreign construction companies doing major works such as dams, tunnels, subways and highways.
Railway Group participated in the construction of the Three Gorges Dam on China’s Yangtze River in, the world’s biggest hydroelectric,.
No diplomatic ties
Dominican Republic and China have yet to forge diplomatic ties on the continuing relations with Taiwan, which has been a close collaborator during the last two decades.
