CEMEX Domincana spends US$2.0M to cut greenhouse gases

Santo Domingo.-  CEMEX Dominicana on Friday said it continues to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its entire production processes, by measuring the carbon footprint based on international standards and the Basel Accords.

It said carbon dioxide emissions have fallen by 9.36% per ton of cement thus far, practically surpassing its 2015 local target of a 10% cut based on the 2006baseline.

CEMEX, which won the Environment Ministry’s National Clean Production Award this year, said despite aiming to reach a 23% use of alternative fuels to produce cement by 2020, that figure is currently at 26%, for which its new goal is 29%.

The company’s latest results were disclosed at a seminar hosted by the Export and Investment Center (CEI-RD), the National Climate Change Council and the Dominican Exporters Association (ADOEXPO).

In the activity supported by the Latin America Economic and Caribbean Commission (ECLAC), CEMEX also provided figures in its progress toward environmental controls for emissions of dust, gases, solid waste and wastewater, with an investment of around US$2.0 million.
