Canadians file criminal charges against Puerto Plata deputy prosecutor

Santo Domingo.- Two Canadian businessmen on Thursday filed a complaint against Puerto Plata province deputy prosecutor Julio C. García Morfe, for his alleged criminal misconduct.

Michael De Groote and Andrew M. Pajak filed the complaint at the Office of the Prosecutor, alleging that the official violated their fundamental rights and principles of legality and objectivity.

They based their legal action against Garcia, for executing an arrest warrant “with harmful recklessness” and without due procedural diligence.

De Groote, reportedly one of Canada’s 100 wealthiest men and a renowned donor for schools, said the deputy prosecutor processed the warrant without providing a single fact to prove their criminal responsibility.

“It’s an unheard proceeding which revives fears of the ancient inquisitorial system,” De Groote said, through his lawyers, Julio Cury, Alfredo Lachapel and Francisco Fernández.
