Canadian man and his girlfriend got into a deadly road accident Wed, July, 24′th, Cabarete

Cabarete accident Canadian man

The Canadian man “George” who collided with a Pick-up truck while driving on a motorbike yesterday (July, 24′th, 2013) with his girlfriend by Coconut Palms is in stable condition and he can remember, talk and see. However he lost 5 toes and suffered a heavy head injury and other damages, and had to be stitched up.

The Worst part about this accident, is the tragic loss of his Girlfriend “Santa” who supposedly drove the bike. Friends of theirs have reported that Santa was refused treatment in Sosua as she didn’t seem to have money or insurance (and neither her or George were in a condition to arrange for this to be in order as they were both in critical condition). The drivers were told to take her to a public hospital in Puerto Plata instead – however she didn’t make it and died.

We welcome comments from readers of this article in regards to your views on hospitals obligations to “Save lives” when it’s life threatening irregardless of nationality, financial situation etc…

Please also comment on:  Foreigners or wealthy Dominicans who try to rescue people in urgent need for medical help, who suddenly find themselves trapped  by hospital staff, their security and sometimes corrupt police, only to be manipulated and forced to pay for treatments and operations when all they wanted to do was to help bring them to experienced people who can save or help them.

P.S. We thank all those readers who responded to our help request for blood donations, and especially thanks to those who went to George’s rescue!

Is there some kind of hospital’s rule that they can not refuse you with a First Aid, irregardless if you have money or not, later they can choose to pass you on to another medical clinic for further treatment, but they are obliged to help you on the spot, especially if they see that a patient will unlikely survive a 30 km trip to the nearest public hospital? What happened to the well know Hippocratic Oath, a doctor is supposed to live by? A related section from the Hippocratic Oath has been translated as “I will follow that system of regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous. I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel; and in like manner I will not give to a woman a pessary to produce abortion. With purity and with holiness I will pass my life and practice my Art. I will not cut persons laboring under the stone, but will leave this to be done by men who are practitioners of this work. Into whatever houses I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of the sick, and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief and corruption; and, further from the seduction of females or males, of freemen and slaves.” In other words they swear “to do no harm”!

    Here are the real facts:

    1) The girl was under age – was she driving the bike? Was she the long-term girlfriend of a Canadian old man? That’s not good.
    2) She was taken to CMC in critical conditions and died shortly after.
    3) Nobody went to the clinic to claim the body, that’s why it was sent to the public hospital in Puerto Plata. Wasn’t her “boyfriend” supposed to take care of her?

In response to “verygood’s” bitter comments that are notverygood:

    1) She was not underage!! FYI – He’s not an old man, and if you think so then have the gut’s to tell him to his face when he recovers! And who are you to judge what is good for others? And even if she hadn’t been his girlfriend, then she deserves to be saved just like you would like to be in the same situation – don’t be naive or hypocritical!

2 + 3) Witnesses explain that she was alive when rejected and sent off to Puerto Plata. If you were George and your head had just suffered serious trauma, are you arrogant enough to claim that you could resolve financial issues for your girlfriend in such a state?

    * Witnesses also explain that George didn’t receive his operation for over 7 hours!! due to the hospital prioritizing getting the cash in their hand 1′st – such nasty attitudes kills people! When hospitals management have lost the ability to empathize with humans in life or death situations, then they better change their wall signs from saying “Emergency Room” to “Emergency room only cares for affluent victims!”.

Sure if individuals are not in a life threatening situation and they don’t have the cash or insurance for treatment at a private hospital, then they can be asked to approach a public hospital. However if they need their lives saved, then bloody save them!! and sort out getting the payment afterwards! The popularity that will come from such kind deeds (even if they didn’t get paid on all such cases) will be enormous over time, as they would gain a ton of respect in the region that would attract hundred fold of repeat patients, who would gladly pay due to the great reputation and service. Sad though that too many greedy business people are too short sighted to realize this – shame on these empty souls!

The sad fact in DR is that money comes first. There are few natives who will take care of someone in an accident but you will find 100 witnesses to an accident who will say that it was the gringo’s fault.
A friend of mine took an injured Dominican to hospital to be confronted with a bill and arrest. Is this a Christian country? No.
I have ridden motorcycles all my life and do so here. How to survive? Total concentration and anticipate the stupid things that drivers do here. They are not taught to drive as we know it but then they do not like to learn either….oh well.
Maybe there was only one good Samaritan and his race died out a long time ago.
