Border security enhanced
The chief of the Army, Major General Ruben Dario Paulino Sem has announced they are stepping up border patrols after an increase in border tensions after the killing of an elderly Dominican couple in a suspected robbery. He said that there are 4,500 soldiers on the border. Paulino Sem says that they have identified the names of the murderers of the Neiba couple and have requested their extradition from Haiti to be tried in the country. He said that after the incident the Provincial Security Council was formed made up by the Army, Police, Migration and Provincial Government and they would meet weekly in all the border provinces to discuss any incidents.
He also announced a 3,000-man contingent would be patrolling streets nationwide for the Christmas holidays.
Yesterday, Thursday 28 November isolated incidents occurred at the Malpasse-Jimani crossing with Haiti brought trade to a standstill when Haitians threatened to retain any Dominican vehicle that crossed the border. There was no problem on the Dominican side with vehicles crossing. El Caribe reports that one of the stones thrown by Haitians damaged film equipment belonging to the NCDN TV station.
