Bakers go from threats to a 40% jump on bread
Santo Domingo.- The country’s bakers on Monday went from their traditional threats to raise the price of bread during the holidays to announcing a whopping 40% increase.
Staring today consumers will have to pay at least two pesos more for a piece of bread, said the bakers grouped in the MPIH.
A bread which cost RD$5 is now RD$7.00, or 40% more, said MPIH president Francisco Capellán, who argued that it reflects the jump in the cost to produce bread.
He said the bakeries had tried to avert the price increase by asking president Danilo Medina for a subsidy of their products, among other demands to compensate for the various increases in production costs.
