Another major makeover for a slum unveiled today
Santo Domingo.- The Government will reveal today the name of the winning company whose architectural design will seek to remake the impoverished barrio of La Barquita, in the sector Los Mina, Santo Domingo East.
It’s the second time that an entire barrio gets a makeover that includes apartment buildings and public areas, the first being Hoyo de Chulin, rebuilt in the late 1980s and dubbed Puerto Isabela, on the Ozama river.
The announcement is slated for 5pm at the National Palace, headed by Presidency chief of staff Gustavo Montalvo.
With the project president Danilo Medina seeks a solution for families constantly displaced by the flooding when the Ozama River overflows its banks after heavy rainfall.
The Government also plans to relocate La Barquita’s inhabitants further north to Cachon de la Rubia, whose residents however oppose the plan.
