Agriculture: ban on live pigs from the US still on
Santo Domingo.- The Agriculture Ministry’s Livestock Dept. on Friday announced it will continue the ban on live pigs imports from the United States, where reports surface of an outbreak of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED), an illness caused by a corona virus.
Livestock said it bolstered bio security measures on local farms, and asked pork producers to increase protection and monitoring at all facilities.
It said the swine illness detected in United States is caused by a corona virus whose main symptoms are diarrhea and fever, but noted that it’s not transmitted to humans.
Livestock added that the disease was diagnosed in the United States last May, which prompted the Agriculture Ministry ban the since imports of live pigs since.
