70% of classrooms to be delivered on time
The government reported yesterday, Wednesday 30 October that 7,000 of the 10,000 newly built classrooms promised for this year would be delivered. Securing the land and construction problems have been mentioned as reasons for the delay. The authorities also announced a new raffle for the construction in 2014 of 401 schools as well as the expansion of 193 schools for a total of 8,000 classrooms, involving an investment of RD$31.8 billion. Education Minister Carlos Amarante Baret, Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo and the director of the Office of Supervising Engineers of the State (OISOE), Miguel Pimentel Kareh made the announcement after meeting with President Danilo Medina at the Presidential Palace.
Amarante Baret said that the first 500 schools (7,000 classrooms) would be delivered in December and the remaining 3,000 will be ready for use when schools reopen in January after the holidays. The government reports having spent RD$22 billion for the 7,000 classrooms that will be delivered and that have been built by Public Works and the OISOE.
