There’s cash in trash, Environment chief says

Santo Domingo.- Environment minister Bautista Rojas on Thursday announced initiatives to profit from trash and improve the country’s environmental quality.

He said there are plans to build 12 landfills nationwide, with their respective transfer stations to better manage municipal waste.

The official also announced the construction of a waste management plant in Santo Domingo East, which he affirms will produce 150 megawatts of energy to the national grid. “We’ve been holding a series of activities with various government agencies and civil society to promote the proper management of solid waste.”

The official said the Environment Ministry, the Dominican Municipal League and the Greater Santo Domingo City councils work to implement a waste management policy centered on improving the population’s health and averting negative impacts on the quality of the country’s tourism regions.

Rojas’ statement came during a cleanup and reforestation drive at the barrio La Zurza, in which officials of the cities which form Greater Santo Domingo also participated.
