Santo Domingo among top 10 tourism cities in Latin America

The Index of World Tourism Destinations, sponsored by MasterCard, places the city of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, in the seventh place among the top 10 Latin American tourism destinations. It also occupies the eighth place when it comes to spending by tourists.

The information is provided in the second edition of the index, which ranks 132 cities by the number of total arrivals of international visitors and their level of spending in each of these cities. According to the survey, the top 10 Latin American cities for international travelers are: 1) Mexico City, Mexico; 2) Buenos Aires, Argentina; 3) Sao Paulo, Brazil; 4) Lima, Peru; 5) Bogota, Colombia; 6 ) San Jose, Costa Rica; 7) Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; 8 ) Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; 9) Caracas, Venezuela; and 10) Quito, Ecuador.

“It is important to understand the role that Latin American cities play in global trade and how electronic payments allow international travelers to carry out their transactions through safe, simple and intelligent systems anywhere in the world,” said Richard Hartzell, President of MasterCard for Latin America and the Caribbean.

“The Index indicates that the region is attracting more international travelers, and we want to continue facilitating the growth of cashless trade,” he said.

The World Tourism Destination Index classifies the 132 cities by the number of total arrivals of international visitors and their pattern of spending during their travels.
