Poultry farms rebuke boycott
SANTO DOMINGO.- Poultry producers today warned it’s impossible to sell chicken meat doe less than 50 pesos a pound, arguing rising costs and ever expanding intermediaries, and rebuked Consumer Protection Agency director Altagracia Paulino’ call on Wednesday for its boycott .
“I’m outraged. This woman Altagracia Paulino has poked a hornet’s nest she herself doesn’t know how to get out of. We cannot sell for less than that because we’ll disappear,” said Ambiorix Cabrera, president of the Licey and Moca poultry producers.
He called “irresponsible” Paulino’s call to boycott chicken to force lower prices as distributors proposed and the government’s threat of allowing the meat’s import. “It’s irresponsible to make such a call. There’s to sell chicken for less than 50 pesos.”
He added that even with imports the price of chicken would remain the same because in his view the middlemen are the same and also the fact that the government doesn’t have the logistics to sell it.
