Police tear gas halts students headed to National Palace

Santo Domingo.- Antiriot Police wielding shotguns and tear gas launchers dispersed Thursday’s march by students and employees of the Santo Domingo State University (UASD) before they could get close to the National Palace, where the protesters sought to deliver a document with their demands.

Dozens of students were about to exit the campus though the east gate carrying flags and banners in rebuke of what they affirm was the National Police brutal crackdown of last week’s protest, which led to the death of a UASD student last week.

The agents fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the protesters, who were quickly dispersed, while the area’s street vendors were seen picking up their wares in haste.

In the document the students demand that the Government repeal the tax reform, expand the financial aid in the card student, build two pedestrian walks near the campus and disburse 5% of the national budget to the UASD.
