Plague targeted in 19,000 hectares of southern coffee plantations
Santo Domingo.- Ministry of Agriculture will immediately refurbish nearly 19,000 hectares of coffee plantations in the South, to fight coffee rust, raise production and create jobs in the impoverished areas.
It announced the creation of the Health Emergency Program, to support the activities aimed at controlling the outbreak of the disease in coffee plants, which emerged in San José de Ocoa, Azua, Barahona, Bahoruco, Independencia and Pedernales.
The program aims to monitor plantations and implement efficient management to ensure controlled planting, proper shade management, pruning, weeding, balanced fertilization and chemical control of diseases.
To deal with affected plantations, 625 crews of 10 workers each will be contracted for a period of 80 days, from December 20 to April 10.
