November, 2-5 the fourth annual “Masters Surf Reunion”
The fourth “Masters Surf Reunion” will bring together different generations of Dominicans surfers.
The Reunion will be held November 2- 5 in “Playa Encuentro,” Cabarete, on the country’s north coast. This once sleepy fishing village has become one of the Caribbean’s most important destinations for water sports, especially for wind and kitesurfing. For those who want to start practicing these sports, there are plenty of instructors in town. Cabarete is now famous for its impressive variety of small hotels and restaurants, all overlooking the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.
Some 120 surfers will compete in the “Masters Surf Reunion.” They will compete in the “Master,” “Grand Master,” “Kahuna,” and “Big Kahuna” categories.
Another category will be the “Come Back,” where one-time surfers who are returning to the sport will be able to compete.
The “Long-Board” competition will feature surfers who use the classical models of surfboards.
Other categories: the “Master Boogie Board,” the “Master-Ladies” and the “Father-Son.”
Internationally renowned surfers, such as Craig Schiber (Tequila), 2011 Masters champion in the “Big Kahuna” category, and John Ashton, four times world champion Master surfer, have confirmed their participation.
Dominican surfers Tony Mendez and Robert Read, who in the world Master championship in 2007, held in Puerto Rico, obtained the 5th and 6th place respectively in the “Big Kahuna” category, and Orlando Bonilla, multiple national champion Grand Master category, will also participate.
The “Masters Surf Reunion” is co-sponsored by the Dominican Association of Surfing Master and the Aquatic Sports Association of the North Coast.
Cabarete is a resort community which has become the best place in the Caribbean to practice water sports, most especially wind and kitesurfing. There are certified schools in town, catering to enthusiasts interested in these particular sports.
